Since last year I felt like I was ambling along without any sort of Real direction (my fault), this year I am going to make myself be aware of EVERYTHING I practise and WHY I exercise it! To amend aid me with this task (since I'm a VERY visual learner) I typed upwardly the Alabama Grade of Written report Standards for 6th class Reading-Language-Literature-Writing (everything I teach with the exception of the engineering science standards). I am going to impress and cutting and put on a bulletin lath correct nigh my desk and small group table. Each time I introduce/teach a skill I am going to highlight it to assist keep myself on track.
Yeah, aye, I know that I am supposed to wait at the standards and imprint them into my encephalon at the beginning of the twelvemonth so keep looking at them as I plan my lessons. However, when you are given a scripted "research based" program to teach with, you lot just assume that EVERYTHING is covered explicitly and many, many, many times. Reality check: don't assume annihilation (I'thou non going to underline the chunk in that discussion that should exist continuing out to you by now!). π
Now don't get me incorrect-I didn't do ALL that Scott Foresman provides considering it's impossible and then I might take missed some stuff. But, I take been told in the past to just brand sure I teach the TARGET skills-the ones with the bulls eye beside them-well, I don't remember that worked!
And so-here we get again! Hither is the document for y'all to print, and I besides posted information technology on my AL COS Standards page on this blog.

I might spell this unabridged post incorrectly because my eyes are crossed from doing these vocabulary words and uploading them! π
All of the units (i-half dozen) vocabulary word cards have been uploaded for Reading Street. Whewβ¦.
Somebody has already suggested I do a cloze vocabulary activity for each calendar week-if you take any other things that you lot want me to do (try) simply go out me a comment!, eastward
This is what'south in the works for the near future: powerpoints for each week (more than like a teacher guide to proceed y'all on task) π and a week at a glance canvas for y'all to be able to see the STUFF that y'all need to encompass, etc.
I hope everyone is able to use some of this stuff! π

I but created a new folio for the Criterion Assessments for the Scott Foresman Reading Street reading program for sixth class. These documents show what reading comprehension skills are tested for each unit of measurement on the Benchmark Cess that you give. Each document has the question#, the tested skill, and whether or not information technology was a targeted skill, review skill, or extended skill.
Allow me just explicate something real quick, and this might not have affected you, merely information technology did me since final year was my 1st year in sixth grade after 6 years in Kindergarten.
At that place is a targeted reading comprehension strategy and skill that goes along with each weekly story (like primary idea, generalize, etc.). All of you know that there is TOO MUCH to teach and then nosotros usually don't go to everything each calendar week. Which means we have to skip some stuff. I was told that the targeted skills (the ones that have a bullseye) are the Nearly IMPORTANT ones and make sure I teach those-don't worry if I tin can't go to other stuff. Well, this is all fine and good, only LOTS of the other stuff is tested on the benchmark assessments as well as the ARMT!!! I guess I didn't really take the time this past twelvemonth to sit downwardly and figure all this out (I know, shame on me), so guess what? If my kids didn't get taught some of this stuff in fifth class or before, OR if they just didn't get it when they were taught it in fifth class or before (I know that doesn't happen), then they DID NOT Go Information technology! π¦ OMG!!!!
Now, I don't know about the rest of you lot, but I experience like I could teach the Scott Foresman Reading Street program til seven:00 pm each night and STILL NOT COVER Information technology ALL! π The weekly story itself feels like information technology is 87 pages long (I know, information technology's simply about 12 -14), just it takes forever just to "read information technology", much less teach the strategies/skills that need to exist taught through the story.
Last twelvemonth I felt similar I taught the "story" more than than the strategies/skills that the kids needed to be able to use to ANY TEXT.
What's a girl to practice? Well, let's only say that something has got to change. I want my kids to be strategic readers of ANY TEXT, non just the stories from Scott Foresman that should simply be the vehicles through which I teach them how to exist strategic readers. I am open to any suggestions from anyone else that uses this program!!!!!!! π

I just created a new page for some more Scott Foresman Reading Street stuff. This page will be used to upload documents that focus on all units. I merely uploaded a sheet that lists all of the comprehension strategies and skills that are taught in each of the 6 units (information technology'southward weekly). This only lets you see at a glance what you lot will be teaching and what yous should have been teaching. π
I have more plans for this page and so stay tuned! π

Estimation of Results-Fiction (eight)/Non-fiction (3). Obviously, the students similar fiction more than than non-fiction soooo-next year I am going to make certain that when we read non-fiction I volition choose a couple of the in a higher place and and then observe some high-involvement manufactures, magazines, etc. for the rest. I know that I demand to teach them how to read and understand non-fiction, merely I want it to exist as enjoyable as possible for them (AND ME)!! π
Short Story Votes
Coming Over 7
A Dog's Life 5
Eating Utensils iv
Telephone call of the Deep Wilds, Song of Chirimia, They've Got Personality, Going Ape, and Wild Peco's Neb all received 3 votes.
OVERALL: I had A LOT of students say they liked certain stories considering they like animals! And look at how many chose "Coming Over" which is about immigration. They liked this story-this sort of surprised me! π I call up that I will make certain clearing is a topic that we read virtually more than once.
