Artist Contour: Lance Cardinal

A 2-Spirited Ethnic Artist and member of the Bigstone Cree Nation in Treaty 8 territory, Lance Cardinal now calls Treaty 6 territory and Edmonton dwelling. With 27 years of experience as a professional set designer, singer, dancer, creative person, designer, painter, miniaturist, producer, event planner, author and cultural advocate, there isn't much that Lance tin't do.

Leaving home at an early age is never easy, merely Lance knew he had to move to the big city to follow his dreams. Having attended Victoria School for the Visual and Performing Arts, he began his professional career at 16 every bit an actor, performing on the Citadel Theatre stage earlier he had fifty-fifty graduated!

Growing up in a small northern Indigenous customs was tough, peculiarly since at that place was very niggling art or creativity. "I grew upwards in a low income, single parent home surroundings. I was a very bad-mannered immature guy who had a pretty hard time making friends or finding my place in the world. I come from a very large and shut extended native family, my mom and her sisters and brothers became my other parents. My mom was my best friend, my biggest fan and my reason for success. Such an incredibly powerful adult female, taking care of united states of america kids, and any other kid who needed it."

After building a career and foundation in Edmonton, Lance left for greener stages and moved to Vancouver to further pursue existence a singer/dancer/player. "I had just finished filming a reality show in L.A. with NBC (Your Large Break) and decided a big new start would be expert. I stayed there for 15 years, condign a professional person union thespian, producing live amusement in the center of Vancouver, showing my Ethnic sculpture piece of work in galleries and working as an honor-winning set designer in the professional theatre scene. Merely through all that success I felt as though something was yet missing… there was no end game to this career path, specifically to me as an Indigenous person. I was getting very caught up in the fast pace and forgot well-nigh my Cree roots."

Upon his return to Alberta, Lance was welcomed with open artillery and was able to accept everything he had learned while working and travelling around the earth to aid create programming with the elders and municipality. "It was the connectedness back to my civilization and teachings that took the virtually fourth dimension. Getting back to following the red road and trying to follow the ways of our ancestors. Lots of time talking to elders, going to ceremonies, leading talking circles and continuing on the shores of the lake."

His passion for giving back was channeled through the opening of the Calling Lake Arts Academy, an afterschool drop-in arts facility for community children anile seven-77. Lance offered classes in dance, art, design, acting, puppetry, singing, and photography, and produced all the holiday events and theatrical productions. His biggest hope is that kids would exist inspired to pursue the arts. "I just want to provide opportunities to create happy, positive memories for our kids. A place for our people to limited thoughts and feelings creatively, without words, without repercussions. This is of import to the development of our immature people. Happiness and promise, especially if they don't have that anywhere else."

Lance has taken that passion for inspiring youth online (thanks in part to isolation) with his Family Fine art Run a risk YouTube series. He demonstrates activities that kids, parents, and guardians can practise together and he shares some Cree words and teachings in a fun and inviting way, with encouragement and kindness, for ALL people, Indigenous and non-Ethnic.

While no one knows what the hereafter may bring, Lance enjoys it that way. "I tend to believe that nosotros are in the hands of the creator, he has a journey for us. Nosotros just pray and ask for guidance. With hard work and determination…and a little bit of help from the Creator…we will become where we are needed."
